Why?

So, one of my coworkers was rambling about something on the TV.  I think we had the news on.  Then he said "JESUS CHRIST!!!"
Now I did not, and still do not know exactly what he was referring to.  But I said "why blame it on Jesus Christ?"  I was just playing along.
So he said "then why are there so many stupid people in the world? Who made them like that?"
All I could come up with was this.  I told him "when God gave man free will, all bets were off!"
